“Many things start with a name.”

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi is a surreal and haunting narrative. An intriguing story about coming of age whilst being plagued by otherness, both physically and mentally. Disturbing yet beautiful, Emezi is a true artist for storytelling and Freshwater was a truly fascinating debut.

I won’t lie, this was a difficult book to read. The self mutilation imagery was detailed and often. Along with drug, alcohol and sexual abuse and eating disorders, which made the story confronting. It definitely delves into heavy topics, and although stunningly written, I felt like a lot of the traumatic imagery was unnecessary and repetitive. It also took me a while to get used to the supernatural aspect of the story. The Ogbanje that plagued her mind - a Nigerian spirit that’s born into a human body, a kind of malevolent trickster whose main objective is to kill its host. To me this Ogbanje, came across like a form of DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder).

“No matter how mad it sounded, the things that were happening in my head were real and had been happening for a very long time.”

The Ogbanje take turns narrating the non-chronological chapters, as ‘We’ the collective spirits; Ada, the human; and Asughara (meaning dagger), a named sprit of the ‘We’, born from violence and trauma. The story is somewhat disjointed, which I think correlates well with Ada’s mental instability.

“It's like you're on this thin line between being alive and being dead, like one small shift could send you in either direction.”

I recommend this book for those who enjoy fast-paced, surreal adult fantasy, or fictional biographies. I’d urge you to look up the content/trigger warnings before reading though.

Anyone else on a pre winter, post pandemic hiatus?? ⛅️

Such a mixed bunch of feels going around my space in addition to a pesky bout of Covid, it’s ok to have a little break yeah?

Anyhoo, we are still about + after a month of lovely longer stay guests, our painter will finish up the exterior refresh next week. Together with forever adding bits + pieces to make Sommarhus what guests have come to love, I’m excited to continue sharing our cosy little house with a flurry of winter guests.

Lots of winter + spring availability for those who love to rug up or bunker down.
